Using the Connection Feature of Endnote
Citations can be downloaded using the Connections feature from Endnote.
- You connect to a search service like PubMed.
- Or you can connect to a file within a search service like Ovid or First Search.
- You can use the IP address system to connect databases that are available campus-wide or to a remote database with a password.
- Just as there are specific "filter" files for downloading and "style" files for output, there is a group of "Connection" files. These Connection files can be edited.
- To download any of these files, they can be found on the left menu bar of on the support page of EndNote.com: http://endnote.com/support/ensupport.asp
- One problem with Connection files and Filter files is that they bring in a full titles from Ovid when you want an abbreviated title. Or perhaps they leave a period in a field where it should not be. The Filters can be edited but the Connection files cannot be edited for these problems. Contact Roz Dudden in the library if your have these downloading problems.

Citation Verification
Incomplete or erroneous citations can be easily verified using field searching techniques. Of the eight components of a citation (au, ti, so [so = jn, yr, vo, ip, pg]), you often do not know which is incorrect. You can try various combinations of fields to verify a citation. Below are some sample strategies.
To find this citation:
Zwickey HL. Potter TA. Antigen secreted from noncytosolic Listeria monocytogenes is processed by the classical MHC class I processing pathway. [Journal Article] Journal of Immunology. 162(11):6341-50, 1999 Jun 1. UI: 10352246
Potter TA.au. and 6341.pg.
6341.pg. and 162.vo.
1999.yr. and 162.vo. - this retrieves too many. It is better not to use volume and year.
Antigen.tw. and 1999.yr. and 6341.pg.
10352246.ui. - you can also search on the UI directly, if you have it.
Examples:
- king$.au. and 490.pg.
- jama.jn. and 289.vo.
- pediatrics.jw. and asthma.tw. and 1999.yr.
