Respiratory Care Services at National Jewish Medical and Research Center

Respiratory Care as a department is placed organizationally and administratively within Pulmonary Physiology Services. Respiratory Care Services are provided by state licensed Respiratory Therapists, also called Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCPs). Care is performed under the medical direction of Barry J. Make, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAACVPR, Director of Respiratory Care Services.

Respiratory Care is the healthcare discipline that specializes in the promotion of optimum cardiopulmonary function and health. Respiratory Care Practitioners apply scientific principles to prevent, identify, and treat acute or chronic dysfunction of the cardiopulmonary system. Knowledge of the scientific principles underlying cardiopulmonary physiology and pathophysiology, as well as biomedical engineering and technology, enable RCPs to effectively assess, educate, and treat patients.

We provide a variety of services to patients with either primary or secondary dysfunction of the pulmonary system. We provide patient and family education to facilitate self-care and integration into the community and help to encourage patients to obtain the best pulmonary health possible.

RCP Services are provided Monday through Friday during regular business hours, except for observed holidays. RCPs see both adult and pediatric patients.

Services are initiated according to an authorized medical order from the attending physician or other Healthcare Practitioner (PA-C, CANP). The provision of care is guided by current clinical practice guidelines published by the American Association of Respiratory Care(AARC) and other professional organizations.

Request for services (or a Consultation) can be ordered by a physician or other qualified healthcare provider and scheduled through the Pulmonary Physiology Services by calling (303) 398-1530 or to fax in a Request for Consultation or other proper medical order to the PPS, fax the order to (303) 398-1607.
